What Happened to The Patrick Bass Show?
Some of y’all have asked what happened to my podcast, The Patrick Bass Show. At its peak, we hit the top 1% of all podcasts globally and were pulling in close to 300,000 downloads a month. Then—seemingly out of nowhere—I shut it down.
Why? Fair question. The answer’s not simple, but if you were a fan, I think you deserve some real talk. So here goes:
1. Guest Quality Fell Off a Cliff
By the end of 2024, it became harder and harder to book great guests. And I loathe interviewing “life coaches.” Same recycled advice, different day. Honestly, with a few exceptions, most of them needed a therapist and a day job—not a microphone.
2. Time Became a Beast
A daily show that runs 45–60 minutes takes about 3–4 hours of actual work per episode. Between prep, recording, editing, and publishing, it’s a serious time commitment. And when you factor in reason #3...
3. The Money Just Wasn’t There
I was spending about $400/month to keep the show running. Between hosting, production tools, and backend support, the only ones making money were the vendors. I was in the red every month—and giving up hours of my day to do it.
4. The Impact Felt... Meh
When I started the show, it was a blast—especially the episodes with my crew, the Open Mic Mavericks. But over time, I just didn’t feel like it was making a difference. It started feeling more like a chore than a mission. And when that happens, you’ve gotta ask yourself why you’re still doing it.
Would I Ever Bring It Back?
Never say never. My distributor would love for me to get back behind the mic. At one point, I even had a deal lined up to take the show to radio syndication in four of the top ten U.S. markets. The only thing we were missing? A national sponsor.
So yeah—if the stars aligned and the support was there, I’d consider firing things back up.
In the meantime, I’ve been kicking around a few new ideas—something fresh, something different. Nothing solid enough to share yet, but if and when it starts to take shape, you’ll read about it here first.
Until then, thanks for listening, thanks for reading, and thanks for giving a damn.
Take care,
Patrick
